You know how when the temperature drops and winter is looming, we indulge our bodies with heartier foods and cozier sweaters?
Well, our skin needs some of that love too!
As summer comes to a close, we wanted to share our best skincare tips for the winter.
But first, let’s talk about why skincare is so important during colder seasons.
Why does our skin suffer in the winter?
In the winter, changes are coming from all directions. The weather gets colder, windier and harsher. And when we finally get to the safety of indoor warmth, our skin gets blasted with indoor heating.
This, unfortunately, compromises our skin’s natural moisturizing factor (NMF), which is essential to our skin health. This thin layer of oil on top of our skin acts as a barrier to keep in hydration and defend against the environment. But when it loses its strength, our skin can become dehydrated, sensitive and inflamed.
The point is, life gets hard for our skin in the winter, and it needs our support more than ever during this time!
So how do we combat winter skin?
The name of the game is to ‘stop stripping and start protecting’.
Your priority is to strengthen your skin barrier. This means skipping harsh ingredients, exfoliating gently, and using a ton of skin-loving products.
We’ll make it simple: follow these 5 rules and you’ll be golden with a glow!
5 Rules for Your Glowiest Winter Skin
- Avoid hot water like the plague
Hot water can be extremely harsh and can strip our skin of its natural oils. This can do a lot of damage, especially when our skin is already dehydrated in the winter. Instead, use lukewarm water at all times.
- Gently exfoliate
Emphasis on the gently, because over-exfoliation can wreak havoc on our NMF. Go for a gentle chemical exfoliant like glycolic acid and save those scrubs for summer. Then, make sure to really treat your skin with hydration and oils! *See rules 3 & 4.

- Hydrate like crazy
Slap on those water-based products because you really can’t hydrate enough in the winter. You can even try the Korean 7 skin method for even more intense results. Make sure you do this before putting on any oil-based products!

- Seal it in
Then, use oil-based ingredients that can act as a barrier for your skin and support your NMF! Oils will help our NMF by strengthening it and preventing water from escaping our skin.
Product Recommendation: Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream
- SPF is a must!
UV causes 80% of skin aging, so this is the #1 skincare rule, no matter the time of year. UV rays and free radicals can both permanently damage your skin, so never skip your SPF!
